Voting rights groups have filed a lawsuit against Alabama’s secretary of state over a policy they claim illegally removes naturalized citizens from voter rolls ahead of the November election. The lawsuit alleges that the policy wrongly targets individuals who previously held noncitizen identification numbers before becoming citizens.

“Alabama is targeting its growing immigrant population through a voter purge intended to intimidate and disenfranchise naturalized citizen,” the lawsuit says. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit include two U.S. citizens who received letters telling them they were being moved to inactive voter registration status because of the purge. One is man born in the Netherlands who became a U.S citizen in 2022. The other is a U.S.-born citizen.
