Voting begins in French presidential elections as Macron seeks second term

Polls open across France for the first round of the country’s presidential election, where up to 48 million eligible voters will be choosing one of 12 candidates

Unless someone gets more than half of the nationwide vote, there will be a second and decisive round on Sunday, April 24.

Voting began at 0600 GMT on Sunday and will end at 1800 GMT, at which time the first exit polls, will be published. Such polls are usually very reliable in France. In contrast, the anti-immigration, eurosceptic far-right Le Pen has toured France confidently, all smiles, her supporters chanting "We will win! We will win!".
