Woollahra Council is among a number of councils holding a constitutional referendum at Saturday's local government election.Woollahra residents will vote on reducing the number of councillors from 15 to nine at Saturday's local government elections.
Mr Shields, who is not running for re-election, said the measure would save money and bring Woollahra into line with other councils.ABC News Jak RowlandCampaigning against the proposal are the Greens, who hold two seats, and the five councillors who call themselves the Residents First Woollahra Independents.
"You have to put it in the context that the council budget is well over $100 million," Ms Halkerston Witt said. Merrill Halkerston Witt from Residents First Woollahra Independents said the savings from having fewer councillors would be "minuscule".In 2018, independent panels of experts were introduced across Greater Sydney to determine development applications on behalf of councils.
Almost half of the state's 128 councils have nine councillors, according to Office of Local Government data cited by Woollahra Council officials. Council elections are taking place in NSW on September 14. Here's what you need to know before, during and after the polling booths open.
