Queensland's electoral commission is under scrutiny after ballot paper shortages left some people unable to vote at last weekend's council elections.
A Queensland MP has criticised the electoral commission after ballot shortages prevented people voting in council elections.Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath says she expects the issues to be fixed before October's state election.
Disgruntled voters on the Gold Coast told the ABC they would rather "cop the fine" than wait hours in a long queue.Bundaberg Labor MP Tom Smith said he had written to the Premier about the "outrageous" conduct by the Electoral Commission of Queensland . "This is not an out of the ordinary occurrence, and electors who remained in those polling places received their ballot papers and cast their votes on Saturday."
"The Electoral Commissioner may decide to contact people who appear to have failed to vote after the election, and there will be an opportunity for those people to provide us with a valid reason for not voting," the spokesperson said."If the ECQ think they're going to fine these people, they're mad," he said.
"What the law doesn't say is what would be a reasonable time or an unreasonable time to have to wait, or to come back to get that ballot paper," he said.
