will roll out the first-of-its-kind Vote Float in the “The School Day Parade,” the largest Mardi Gras parade in Mobile. The float, which features images of the late Rep. John Lewis, the ultimate champion of voting rights and Rosa Parks, will bring awareness of the importance of voting rights and civic engagement to tens of thousands along the parade route.
The organization will throw Stand Up Mobile bags, moon pies and beads to the crowd, which last year was estimated as nearing 100,000. “We are so excited to join in the Mardi Gras celebrations while bringing awareness of voting rights and the need to be engaged to thousands throughout our community,” said Amelia Bacon, co-founder of Stand Up Mobile. “There are few opportunities to reach as many people as we can today and there is no issue as important as civic participation.” "The School Day Parade" began as part of an effort to ensure the MLK neighborhood and community was included in the city’s Mardi Gras festivities. The Martin Luther King Business & Civic Organization INC., conceived by the late Alabama State Representative, Dr. Yvonne Kennedy and now led by Sharon York Sanders, originally sought for the neighborhood to be included in the Tuesday parade but, when that was denied, “The School Day Parade” was born.
