With voter turnout expected to reach near-record highs in November, MTV and more than 60 partners are launching what it hopes will become a new national holiday: Vote Early Day. It is scheduled for Oct. 24.

WASHINGTON – Voting in person can take up time you don't have, whether your polling place isn't convenient or you have a work shift that makes it difficult. Maybe it's both.

Similar to other themed days, such as National Voter Registration Day or National Day of Giving, Vote Early Day is meant to encourage Americans to, of course, vote early. But the effort also seeks to help people, particularly young voters, stay educated on what their state’s laws are related to early voting.

“It was really important for us to, you know, begin to build something that ritualizes this around their existing habits and takes advantage of social media so that they feel, like most coming-of-age moments, they can have a moment celebrated with their friends and memorialize it,” he said. Jennifer Park Stout, head of Global Public Policy of Snapchat, one of the more than 60 brands and nonprofits that have signed onto the holiday, said the company has geared itself to help young voters stay informed and help them go out and vote. This primary season, turnout among younger voters has dropped after a surge in 2018.Stout said signing on to this holiday just made sense.
