An exhibition at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance honours the contribution of young people during periods of war, including the likes of Irene Jones whose family was enlisted in north-east Victoria as volunteer air observers.

abc.net.au/news/shrine-of-remembrance-exhibition-honours-wartime-youth/102714994When 12-year-old Irene Jones heard aircraft activity in the skies above the family farm in north-east Victoria during World War II, she would grab a pencil and paper, go outside, and take notes about the planes she saw.

Irene Jones's 1945 certificate from the RAAF for volunteer air observer service is in the exhibition."It was at the base of Mount Separation, which was on all aviation maps and a direct route for planes flying between Melbourne and Sydney," said Ms Jones, now aged 91. Her mother, Rachel, would telephone the information through to the Air Force and also send them the completed forms by post at the end of each month.

Honouring the legacy and contribution of young people like Ms Jones during wartime has been explored in an exhibition at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, entitled Toys, Tales & Tenacity: Childhood experiences of war. Most of what she saw was not unusual, but Ms Jones remembered hearing the military Wirraway A-20-265 aircraft on a foggy morning on April 4, 1942."We could hear a plane, but we couldn't see a plane, then the sound disappeared," Ms Jones said.
