The commission presented a proclamation to make June 10 Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Day in the county.
Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe says the 17 volunteer units in the county are a tremendous help for the area.DOTHAN, Ala. - All 17 volunteer firefighter teams across Houston County were recognized for their hard work at Monday’s Houston County Commission meeting.
Jason Reneau, the president of the state’s volunteer fire department association, said the volunteer firefighters are required to complete the same 192-hour yearly training paid firefighters are required to do, yet do it at no cost. Outside of additional funding from the county or other entities, volunteer fire departments typically operate with approximately $40,000 a year.
“The people that were here today that we honored that volunteer their time and volunteer their energies, those people are heroes,” said Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe. “They not only save lives, and that’s the most important thing, but they save the taxpayer millions of dollars every year.” As a token of appreciation to the Houston County Commission, the fire departments put together a sign with a collage of pictures of equipment they were able to purchase with their funding.
