The new world of all-electric vehicles comes with a number of concepts to better understand. Let's figure ’em out.
Did you know that 1 horsepower is the amount of power required to lift 550 pounds to a height of 1 foot in 1 second? Or, did you know that a foot-pound of torque is literally 1 pound of force exerted to the end of a lever that's one foot long?
Electricity flows through conductive surfaces like wires. If this conductive surface forms a continuous loop, basically a return path from the power source for electrical current, it's called a circuit. And you must have a complete circuit for electricity to flow, just like water won't flow out of a pipe that's capped on one end.
That number represents, approximately, the charge delivered by a current flowing at 1 ampere for 1 second. What's an ampere? Before we can define that we need to add a few more terms to our toolbelt.Moving all those electrons requires work, and that's where joules come in. A joule, named after 19th-century physicist James Prescott Joule, refers to the amount of work required to move 1 coulomb of electrons. Believe it or not, this can be measured in good ol' foot-pounds: 0.
So, that 15-amp breaker sitting there all humble in your breaker box? It's capable of shuttling approximately 90 quintillion electrons every second. The watt is named after James Watt, an 18th century scientist and engineer mostly known for his work on steam engines, of all things. A kilowatt-hour is simply how many kilowatts a battery can provide for a full hour. Your average EV has around an 80-kilowatt-hour battery, which means it can provide 80 kilowatts of electricity for an hour straight.8 photosWith all those units of measurement down, we can start to do some math on EVs and charging."You can measure power by multiplying current with volts," ChargePoint's Vandrevala said.
The second figure is efficiency, which is measured in different ways in different areas, but in North America is most commonly reported as miles per kilowatt-hour.
