The automaker was forced to halt sales and production due to a problem with the ID.4 's door handle s, which could inadvertently open due to water infiltration damaging the electronic circuits. Volkswagen quickly identified the issue but couldn't act immediately due to a lack of spare parts.
Dealers were given a recall procedure on December 19, according to the American NHTSA. Last Friday, January 3, Volkswagen announced that production of the ID.4 would resume at its American plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dealers will inspect the door handles of the 98,896 recalled vehicles and carry out repairs, which may include a software update. Repairs are estimated to take four hours. The recall involved ID.4 models from 2021-2024 and affected all door handles. The stop-sales order applied to new and unsold ID.4s, as well as used vehicles. Volkswagen is hoping for a return to normal sales in the coming weeks and months, offering attractive lease deals in the US.
