It’s a big day for Nayan Fernando in Melbourne’s north. His vote at Gilgai Plains Primary School is his first since becoming a citizen in March. “This is the opportunity that I’ve been waiting for,” he says. “It’s a proud day for me, I’m proud of being an Australian.” Originally from Sri Lanka, he is impressed by the freedom associated with both Australia and this vote. “There’s no political interference – this campaign, it’s just my choice to vote yes.
We all came here, it’s a multicultural country, and they were here first,” he says. “This is just listening to them. Then we can get their ideas when it’s about them, there’s nothing bad about that.” It’s a sentiment shared among many voters at the primary school in the Calwell electorate, where conversations on the ground are leaning towards yes.
