Vogue’s Time Capsule From an Unprecedented Spring Arrives in Bookstores Today

Today, we’re excited to announce the publication of Postcards From Home–the book–which documents an unprecedented spring. VoguePostcardsfromHome

Now, more than six months into the pandemic, it’s easy to think about a “before” and “after”—those days when we lived in blithe ignorance, and the categorically different days that followed, in which lives, routines, and livelihoods were profoundly disrupted.

But in the spring, there was something of an in between—weeks and months in which we didn’t quite know how long all this would last or where it was going. It was a time in which everyday objects assumed novel dimension: A pile of toilet paper gained new currency; a living room fort constructed of couch cushions stood in for parental despair and childhood cabin fever; a dog in a bandanna mask became both a cute joke and fervent hope that we could do something to turn this virus around.Postcards From Home: Creativity in a Time of Crisis . There was Donatella Versace, peering through the window of her Milan apartment; Annie Leibovitz, in her pajamas, sorting laundry with a jug of bleach by her feet; Ashley Graham, holding her newborn son on a windswept Iowa farm—a scene that could not feel further from the runway. That project also made up our June/July issue—a special issue, conceived and executed with unprecedented speed, as the world around us changed day to day. Our efforts in those months were to create a record, in as close to real time as possible, of how the pandemic had caused us to reevaluate our lives.—the book. If our work in the spring and early summer was a living document, this is more of a time capsule: a curated selection of some of what we think is the best work we published at that time and a reminder of the remarkable resilience and creativity with which people confronted this disaster. Though we did not know it at the time, all the global September issues ofBelow, a few of our favorite images from the book.
