The British cellphone carrier Vodafone has just announced that it has made a “historic first space mobile video call from a remote area of Wales,”Fittingly for space-related story, British astronaut Tim Peake was on hand to witness the call, which seamlessly connects satellites to Vodafone ’s terrestrial network. The company says it’s the only satellite service in the world to offer mobile broadband directly to regular 4G or 5G phones.
The call was made from a remote part of Wales where there has never been mobile broadband before, the company said. This wasn’t just a first for that part of Wales, though. The breakthrough used the pleasantly-named Bluebird satellites AST SpaceMobile.
