Vladimir Putin will be officially announced as the winner of the 2024 Russian presidential election, as the first rounds of vote counting place him head and shoulders above his challengers.
Vladimir Putin to win Russian election with huge majority to maintain his grip on power for a fifth term until 2030
Putin has maintained office as prime minister or president since 1999, with the three candidates on the ballot barely making a dent to challenge his winning streak. The Russian president’s primary political opponent, Alexei Navalny, died suspiciously in an Arctic prison after being sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Boris Nadezhdin, who was barred from running in the election, hoped Russians would vote against Putin and openly said he wanted people to use their chance to show their “real attitude” as to what was happening. Guriev said Putin was “committing his latest crime”, alluding to the election being rigged by the leader, who is second only to Joseph Stalin as the longest ruling politician of Russia.
