The meeting will only be the first time the Russian leader has visited the pariah nation in more than two decades
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un visit the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia in 2023 , having last visited in 2000. Mr Kim met Mr Putin in Russia 2019, and again in 2023 at a space launch facility in the east of the country.said: “At the invitation of the Chairman of State Affairs of the DPRK , Kim Jong-un, Vladimir Putin will pay a friendly state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on June 18-19.
In return, the Russian leader has reportedly offered to help Pyongyang develop satellite technology for military purposes. In March alone, Moscow shipped more than 165,000 barrels of refined petroleum to North Korea, a US official toldOfficials of South Korea and the United States warned on Friday that deepening military ties between the two countries could be in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, due to the sanctions imposed on both countries.
South Korea’s vice foreign minister, Kim Hong-kyun, said in an emergency phone call with US Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell, that Mr Putin’s visit should not result in more military co-operation between Pyongyang and Moscow in violation of the resolutions “While closely monitoring related developments, the two sides agreed to resolutely respond through airtight co-operation to North Korea’s provocations against South Korea and actions that escalate tensions in the region,” Seoul’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
