Vivid's Tekno Train gives passengers a glimpse of the historic, and usually inaccessible Lavender Bay line — and a hint of 'what the future could be'.
Trains in Sydney 's north have been transformed into a party on wheels in a Vivid event the first of its kind this year. The experience utilises the historic Lavender Bay line, which some locals want to see turned into a waterfront high line .
The experience is designed by ARIA-nominated music producer, and self-confessed train nerd, Paul Mac. "It opened in 1893, so it's well over 100 years old," James Dalton, chair of the Australian Railway Historical Society said."It's pretty unusual, given where it is, it's really in the centre of the city, and it's probably the most scenic little branch line remaining in Sydney."Some locals, including the Sydney Harbour HighLine group, have been calling for it to be pedestrianised as a permanent waterfront high line.
"You've got what is capable of becoming one of the icons of Sydney, it is a walkway through parklands, to Luna Park, to North Sydney Olympic Pool, to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and to the Opera House."Cr Mutton said the transformation of the hidden line into public space would be a way to address the need for parkland in an increasingly dense area.
Cr Mutton has called on the government to reconsider that decision, and to protect the line from private development. He said he was hopeful that the Tekno Train experience would prompt people to consider the possibilities for the future of the Lavender Bay line.
