These changes are crucial for supporting and fostering the growth of Ethereum 's ecosystem. Buterin's initiative stems from a pressing need for clarity regarding Ethereum 's future scalability.
Developers, known as builders, who work on Ethereum applications and tools require a roadmap outlining the network's potential over the next five years to make informed long-term plans. The current upgrade process is perceived as too sluggish, hindering the platform's ability to keep pace with evolving demands.Buterin challenges the prevailing notion that Ethereum's layer-1 is incapable of scaling. He asserts that Ethereum possesses the capacity for substantial expansion, particularly through zkEVMs and Data Availability Sampling (DAS). These advancements could potentially increase Ethereum's capacity by 100 to 1,000 times within a few years, enhancing its accessibility and competitiveness. Buterin emphasizes that Ethereum's current data availability bandwidth is significantly lower than what is required. Instead of adhering to a five-year timeframe, he advocates for raising the target bandwidth to one megabyte per second within a year or two. He stresses the importance of continuous improvements beyond this initial milestone. Layer-2 solutions, known as rollups, which rely on Ethereum for security, stand to benefit greatly from these advancements in Ethereum's base layer. As Ethereum's foundation strengthens, rollups can expand and deliver faster, more cost-effective services. Buterin warns that if Ethereum fails to grow rapidly, it risks becoming less appealing to developers seeking alternative blockchain platforms. He suggests incorporating stricter specifications for Data Availability Provider (DAP) nodes to enhance scalability without compromising security. Ethereum, while not obligated to match the performance of newer projects, must avoid falling behind. Ultimately, faster updates and more ambitious scaling objectives could secure Ethereum's position as a frontrunner in blockchain technology
