A trip to the beach in certain parts of Walton County will soon come with a price tag.
PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A trip to the beach in certain parts of Walton County will soon come with a price tag. The county has announced a new paid parking program that will be implemented in three municipal lots in South Walton on April 3.
The paid parking will be implemented at the Van Ness Butler Municipal, County Road 393 Municipal, and Grayton Beach Municipal lots in South Walton County.“I think there are pros and cons, coming from me, I’m a broke college student, so I just want to go to the beach and have a lot of fun,” said Micah Martin, who is visiting from Alabama. “But I think there are also things that it can help out, like the city and things like that.”“I think that’s just a shame,” said Demick Starling, a visitor from Tennessee, “It’s sad that people come all the way down here, spend their good, hard-earned money on a vacation home, and then have to come in and pay for the parking.” According to a press release from Walton County, 60% of parking revenue will go toward Walton County operations, helping fund services and maintain public amenities. The remaining 40% will be paid to PCI Municipal LLC, a national firm that will manage the parking program. “I think that makes me feel a little more comfortable,” said Martin, “obviously I still would like to go to the beach for free, but if it’s going back to the city and making it more of a fun place for everybody, I think that’s great.” Residents will be able to purchase an annual parking pass for $5 a year. News Channel 7 reached out to Walton County for clarification on what a daily parking rate would be, but did not hear back. “Lower prices would be easier, especially for all visitors involved,” said Leah Jarnac, who is visiting from Tallahassee. “Especially because this is a great place for spring breakers, if the prices are high, then I think it would be difficult for visitors to join.” The new paid parking only applies to the three parking lots. According to Walton County leaders, all other municipal parking lots will remain free of charge. In a press release, Deputy County Administrator Mike Thornton said the county recognizes that changes to the parking policies may be concerning for residents. However, the new program will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of county operations.Southwest Airlines dropping service to 2 major US airportsMom sues school district after teacher’s aide accused of abusing nonverbal studentSpring break staycation ideas in the Dothan areaSAVE America Act: What the election overhaul bill would do
