FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Two finalists for the dean position at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College presented contrasting visions this week, offering the campus community a choice between deep institutional continuity and a systems-focused external perspective.
Kevin Alexander, the current interim dean and a 21-year veteran of the college, and Brenda Medora, a Texas-based higher education executive, outlined their strategies during public forums held Monday and Tuesday. While both candidates emphasized the need to align curriculum with industry demands, their approaches to leadership and growth diverged significantly. Alexander, a lifelong Alaskan and former director of aviation programs, pitched a tenure focused on stability and operational efficiency. He framed CTC as the “foundational college” of the UAF system, arguing that the institution must “make sure our house is in order” before asking for outside assistance. His presentation highlighted specific, tangible opportunities for Alaska’s workforce, including the impending natural gas pipeline project, the deep water port in Nome, and an untapped partnership with the Department of Corrections to educate incarcerated Alaskans. “I see CTC going everywhere, and I see us being effective everywhere Alaska needs us to go,” Alexander said, positioning himself as a leader who understands the unique logistical challenges of the state’s rural interior. In contrast, Medora, currently the chief of staff at Howard College in Texas, focused on building a “thriving culture” driven by data and agility. She said she drew heavily on her experience developing the “Open Roads Promise” program, which provided tuition-free pathways for rural students in West Texas, and urged the college to embrace modern disruptions like artificial intelligence. Medora argued that trade schools must not only teach technical skills but also how to leverage AI tools, warning that students without this knowledge will be “left behind” in the modern workforce. “One person can’t show up and be like, ‘Here’s what we’re gonna do,’” Medora noted, advocating for a collaborative, systems-based leadership style that prioritizes clear communication and professional development.Alexander proposed a “sooner rather than later” examination of the college’s academic structure to improve efficiency, specifically questioning the current placement of general academics and developmental education. Medora, conversely, suggested a “listening tour” for her first year, warning against making “gigantic sweeping changes” immediately. She emphasized the need to secure grants and build a unified culture that bridges the gap between faculty, staff, and administration. The final hiring decision rests with Brian Inher, the Interim Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education. The chosen dean will be tasked with navigating a complex landscape of industry demand for skilled workers and the need to integrate the college more deeply into the broader university system.Postneonatal deaths rose in Alaska since 2017, SUIDS a main reason why ‘Heavily intoxicated’ raccoon passes out in Virginia liquor store bathroom after breaking in, ransacking shelves
