The Covid-19 pandemic has, without a doubt, brought misery to many, but there are those who have the virus to thank for how it has touched their lives in a positive way.

Until the virus caused havoc, and a countrywide lockdown saw the streets go quiet, Phemelo Xhashe and Mpho Moshotetsi were part of the largely sorry sight of drug addicts who loitered in Mahikeng, North West, looking all grubby and scruffy.

He learnt on arrival at the Mahikeng Care Centre, which was previously used as child and youth care centre operated by Bosasa, that it was a shelter for the homeless who were taken off the streets to curb the spread of Covid-19.In all that pain, my body itching, cravings scrapping my stomach and my finding myself almost losing my mind; I still chose to stay on.

“Everything was going well … land was identified and awarded to us, but then my cousin stole a gun from our mentor. I asked him why he stole the firearm and did not wait for us to work, make millions from farming so he could buy himself all the guns he wanted if he was so into them. Out of frustration, I found myself in the wrong company of drug users,” he said.

“I would like to see myself walk out of this centre and go back home and make things right with my family. I am seeking a second chance and my job back, especially because I was not fired but left it for drugs.” “We’re not just spending our time here sitting idle, but there are people who are coming in with different offerings; teaching art, computers and other skills that trigger our interests, which is something for us to use out there to be better people in life,” Xhashe said.
