This cruise around the Greek islands invites guests to go the whole A-lister hog – from throwing tantrums to demanding of staff: “Don’t you know who I am?”

I’m a rock star, and I have a dilemma. My massive suite on the sparkling new Resilient Lady – with balcony, marble benchtops and even a vinyl sound system – has a fully stocked bar which includes a gin I’ve never heard of: Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish.

RockStar status on Virgin Voyages comes with perks including round-the-clock access to Richard’s Rooftop, an outdoor bar on the top deck where there’s an all-you-can-glug Moet et Chandon champagne hour each evening. My suite comes with a stocked bar, and an agent.

I joined Resilient Lady’s official maiden voyage, in Athens, at the port of Piraeus. My “Greek Island Glow” cruise will take in Santorini, Rhodes, Bodrum, and an overnighter on the party island of Mykonos. There is a whole genre of travel writing trashing cruise ships that followed David Foster Wallace’s 1996classic “Shipping Out” . Anothercover story, in May this year, filleted a Goop cruise hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow, then turned on Foster Wallace in the same knife attack.

Virgin Voyages is at the upper end of the mass market. It’s more expensive than most partly because more is included, even if you’re no rock star. There is all food for a start, and not at RSL-style buffets, but at 20-plus eateries, including several fine dining restaurants and upmarket food stations, takeaway joints and bars-with-a-menu.

Almost all the 1408 cabins face the sea, and most have a balcony with hammock. There are 63 RockStar cabins , and 15 Mega RockStar cabins, bigger and ritzier again, with more perks. The city can come to you, too. There’s room service – and if you open the app and shake your phone, anywhere on the boat, a person will turn up with a bottle of Moet, an ice bucket and a couple of flutes. This special service, geolocating you to the correct jacuzzi or double sun lounge, costs $US95.Mega RockStars score their own butler who will mix cocktails, or organise restaurant meals in their room with the same menu and crockery as the restaurant they have selected that night.
