Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit fails in its first test of a rocket launching from a Boeing 747
A Virgin Orbit Boeing 747-400 aircraft named Cosmic Girl takes off from Mojave Air and Space Port in the desert north of Los Angeles on May 25, 2020.
“In the end the questions are always, has everything been thought about and are there any gaps or seams, and those are the questions you only learn when you commit to flight,” Hart said. This handout photo obtained May 25, 2020 courtesy of Virgin Orbit shows Cosmic Girl as it releases LauncherOne mid-air for the first time during a July 2019 drop test.
A successful launch by Virgin Orbit would have marked a dramatic step in getting back on track after the coronavirus pandemic sent most employees home earlier this year while work spaces, procedures and mission control were adjusted. Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart walks past a rocket underneath the wing of a modified Boeing 747 jetliner in Mojave, California, US on July 10, 2019.
