KUALA LUMPUR: All 12 motions proposed for the Malaysian Bar Council's 74th Annual General Meeting were withdrawn as only 87 members out of almost 20,000 turned up for the meeting following Covid-19 concerns.

Newly-elected president Salim Bashir said they did not have a quorum to start the meeting at 10am and had to stand down according to the Legal Profession Act."There were 12 motions proposed. In view of the Covid-19 situation, the Bar Council and the proposers of the motions have decided to withdraw the motions with the optics of tabling them in the future," he said in a press conference after the AGM on Saturday .

Among the motions were banning child marriages, preventing political party-hopping, unresolved deaths and disappearance cases, rights of Sabah and Sarawak natives. Salim said the council members would decide when an extraordinary general meeting would be held in future after the Covid-19 situation improves and for the motions to be tabled.

Besides Salim, the other three Malaysian Bar committee members elected by the 38 new council members upon the conclusion of the AGM were vice-president Surinder Singh, secretary A.G. Kalidas and treasurer Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab.
