A violinist who toured with Will Smith is suing the actor alleging wrongful termination sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. The lawsuit details claims of grooming retaliation for reporting safety concerns and significant emotional distress.
LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 30: Will Smith attends Apple Original Films' 'Emancipation' Los Angeles premiere at Regency Village Theatre on November 30 2022 in Los Angeles California. A violinist who performed with Will Smith during his concert tour last year is suing the rapper and his production company just before the New Year alleging wrongful termination and sexual harassment .
The lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County details a disturbing account of events during the tour Based on a True Story: 2025. Brian King Joseph the violinist claims he was retaliated against for reporting workplace safety hazards. The complaint alleges that Joseph was subjected to grooming and priming by Smith. He claims Smith orchestrated a situation in his hotel room to make him feel unsafe. He entered his Las Vegas hotel room while on tour and found a handwritten note addressed to Brian along with a backpack containing items that raised significant concerns. The lawsuit further states Joseph feared that an unknown individual would return to his room to engage in sexual acts accusing Smith of grooming him. The allegations paint a picture of a toxic work environment and highlight the power dynamics within the entertainment industry. The suit claims Smith sought to sexually exploit Joseph and created an unsafe environment for him while on tour. This has caused severe emotional distress economic loss reputational harm and other damages including PTSD and other mental illness as a result of the termination. Earlier this year I was hired to be a performer on a major tour with somebody who was huge in the industry. So I was excited proud of myself for getting the opportunity. Unfortunately some things happened Joseph said. I can't get too into the details of exactly what that was because it's already a legal issue right now but the reason why I'm speaking out about this is because getting fired or getting blamed or shamed or threatened or anything like that simply for reporting sexual misconduct or safety threats at work is not okay he continued. I know that there's a lot of other people out there who have been afraid to speak out and I understand and if that's you I see you. BERLIN GERMANY - MAY 27: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence attend the European premiere of BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE at Zoo Palast on May 27 2024 in Berlin Germany. Smith's lawyer Allen B. Grodsky vehemently denied the claims stating Mr. Joseph’s allegations concerning my client are false baseless and reckless. They are categorically denied and we will use all legal means available to address these claims and to ensure that the truth is brought to light Grodsky said in a statement. After Joseph reported the incident to hotel staff the complaint alleges someone from the tour management team shamed him and told him he was being fired. This legal action raises serious questions about workplace conduct and accountability in the entertainment world and highlights the need for a safe and respectful environment for all performers. The lawsuit underscores the importance of protecting individuals who report misconduct and creating avenues for them to seek justice without fear of retribution. The allegations are a significant blow to Smith's public image and will likely lead to further scrutiny of his conduct within the industry
