Opinion | Violent soldiers and police are a test of Cyril Ramaphosa's democracy.
In his latest weekly letter to his “fellow South Africans”, President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed the centrality of the Constitution and the fundamental rights it encapsulates in our democratic order.
A few days earlier, Judge Hans Fabricius delivered what may prove to be a landmark judgment in the Collins Khosa case ). Fabricius noted the manner in which the State Attorney responded on behalf of the president and the minister of defence to the Khosa family’s request for details of the circumstances surrounding the assault.
These are alarming shortcomings for a government committed to the rule of law and the protection of human rights. It is lamentable that it required a court order for routine measures to be implemented. This is a kick in the teeth for the Khosa family and not the response one would expect from a caring, compassionate government.
Just recently, Ramaphosa acted against Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams for flouting the lockdown regulations, arguably a lesser misdemeanour, by suspending her for two months and withholding part of her salary. While some may share her sentiments about the irrationality of the lockdown regulations, such intemperate language from a judicial officer, albeit an acting one, is unacceptable.
