We chat with violadavis & thusombedu about the themes and stunts of their fabulous new film TheWomanKing:
Thanks to The Woman King, theatergoers are going to see a considerably different Viola Davis. As the film's lead Nanisca, Davis presents a decidedly different portrayal than what we've seen before: a warrior general, a combination action hero, the spirit of vengeance, and guide for the Agojie, as well as for the Kingdom of Dahomey.
Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedie On The Woman King Ms. Davis, it's a true rare honor to speak with you even briefly. Does Nanisca feel like a different sort of character to you from some of your previous roles? Or did you find echoes of this character in your past work? I know that there were stunt people involved, but it seemed like almost all the action was playing out in real-time with you both, and with the actual actors on the screen. Was there a particular fight scene that was tougher or more ornery or more challenging than the rest of them that you recall?
But Danny [Hernandez] and his team are amazing. And they've got me to a place where it's like, you might not feel confident, but you look badass, and that was good enough for me.
