Vintage Tribune: Given the demographic changes the 14th Ward has experienced over the past few decades, the Burke family’s 70-year domination of its Southwest Side fiefdom borders on the miraculous.

Edward Burke, second from right, on the day he was sworn in as alderman, is with his mother, Mrs. Ann Burke, and Judge Joseph B. Hermes, left, and the Rev. Richard Wolfe of Visitation Parish, in City Council Chambers on March 14, 1969.

Confronting the demographic hurdles the Burkes faced, other Chicago aldermen have followed their core constituency to another ward and run for election there. But that can provoke a nasty head butting with the new ward’s incumbent. The Burkes avoided that by staying in the 14th Ward and moving it progressively westward — away from Spanish speakers, toward white voters.

Mayor Richard J. Daley, left, shakes the hand of Ald. Joseph Burke, 14th, on Feb. 26, 1963, at the Democratic headquarters in Chicago. “That’s how I wind up a 24-year-old Democratic committeeman, and next year the alderman,” Burke said. Ald. Edward Burke and members of New City tour the neighborhood near 52nd and Green streets to see the rundown condition of the homes and alleys on Dec. 7, 1975.
