Senator Cynthia Villar yesterday berated the Department of Agriculture over the agency’s plan to import P10 billion worth of inorganic fertilizer.“I’m very upset on the P10-billion budget for import of inorganic fertilizer. I cannot imagine that we will spend P10 billion for inorganic fertilizer which is bad for our soil,” Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said.
She said farmers can make their own organic fertilizer at a very low cost using composting facilities. Villar said the agency should focus on buying composting machines. To date, the agency has 89 composting facilities which make 89 tons of fertilizer being distributed to farmers and gardeners.
