The Vikings signed Gaskin a month ago but haven’t used him in their backfield at all.
Updated September 26, 2023 5:20 PMThe Vikings have released veteran running back Myles Gaskin, they announced on Tuesday. This move creates a spot on the team's 53-man roster.
Gaskin joined the Vikings at the beginning of this month after being let go by the Dolphins. He was released in a procedural move prior to Week 1 so the Vikings wouldn't have to guarantee his salary, but was elevated from the practice squad for that game and re-signed to the active roster the following week. Gaskin played two special teams snaps against the Eagles in Week 2.
The Vikings acquired Cam Akers in a trade with the Rams last week, and he's expected to make his Minnesota debut against the Panthers on Sunday. With Alexander Mattison, Akers, and Ty Chandler in the backfield, the Vikings didn't need to have a fourth running back on their active roster. It's unclear what they'll do to fill Gaskin's roster spot. All-Pro kick returner Kene Nwangwu isn't eligible to return from injured reserve until next week, and it might be a lot longer until he's healthy. Offensive lineman Chris Reed could be back from the reserve/non-football injury list at some point. The Vikings could sign someone from the practice squad — maybe WR Trishton Jackson, who was elevated for Sunday's game as the WR5 with Jalen Nailor on IR.
