Hanoi, Vietnam—A Vietnamese coast guard vessel is en route to the Philippines for joint training exercises, Hanoi said, the first such exchange between the countries in dispute with Beijing over the South China Sea.

This photo taken on April 20, 2023 shows Philippine Coast Guard personnel onboard their rigid hull inflatable boat sailing towards the Philippine-occupied West York island in the disputed South China Sea, to bring supplies to troops. AFP was one of several media outlets invited to join two Philippine Coast Guard boats on a 1,670-kilometer patrol of the South China Sea, visiting a dozen islands and reefs.

In a January visit to Vietnam by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, the two countries agreed to boost coastguard cooperation in the South China Sea and “peacefully solve incidents at sea.” The visit was an opportunity for both coast guard forces to “promote comprehensive cooperation improve law enforcement ability at sea… to contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability, security and safety in the relevant sea area and in the region.”
