Vietnam to grow coal consumption for another seven years at least

Vietnamese centres such as Ho Chi Minh City have rising energy demand.Australian coal shipments to Vietnam were almost non-existent a decade ago, but the value of Australian thermal coal exports to Vietnam has surged from $108 million in 2016-17 to $1.8 billion in the year to June 2022, according to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources.

The plan means Vietnamese coal-fired generation capacity in 2030 will be 41 per cent higher than 2020 levels, suggesting Vietnam will need to import higher volumes of coal from Australia and Indonesia for at least the next seven years. “It is a little-known fact that more than 99 per cent of coal emissions can be eliminated by processes and systems in wide practice today.”
