Ukrainian troops recently carried out an unusual operation to evacuate a cat from the frontline with the help of a robotic ground vehicle.

Ukrainian troops on the Kharkiv front carried out an unusual special operation recently: evacuating a cat from the line of contact with the help of a robotic ground vehicle. The mission by the “Khartia” Brigade demonstrates how unmanned ground vehicles are used for more than just fighting.

These robots now help with logistics, evacuating injured soldiers, and even humanitarian work on the battlefield.A brigade-released video showed soldiers remotely operating the UGV as it retrieved the cat, affectionately nicknamed “Prapor,” or “Flag,” from frontline positions where he had lived alongside troops for months.“For a long time, the cat stayed with the Khartia fighters at positions near the line of contact north of Kharkiv, sharing with them the daily routine and harsh realities of war,” the brigade said in the video. “He became a true comrade to the soldiers, received the call sign ‘Prapor,’ and, as the servicemen say, is fully worthy of the status of a combat participant.”Expanding use of ground robotsThe evacuation was planned after soldiers decided the cat should no longer remain in constant danger. Using the robotic vehicle, the brigade first delivered supplies to forward positions. On its return, the system carried a transport container with Prapor inside. The entire operation lasted three hours. Prapor was safely transported to the company’s base, where he is now adapting to a quieter life away from shelling and trenches. While the mission was unusual in purpose, it highlights a larger shift in Ukrainian military operations: the broadening role of robotics in active combat zones. UGVs, which range from remote-controlled platforms to autonomous vehicles, have been deployed for resupply runs, reconnaissance, and even medical evacuation.Ukrainian troops have frequently used robots to ferry ammunition under fire or retrieve wounded personnel from exposed positions. Earlier this year, units in Donetsk reported employing tracked robotic platforms to move supplies across minefields where traditional vehicles risked destruction. In one widely circulated case in 2023, Ukrainian forces used a robotic system to evacuate an injured soldier from near Bakhmut, drawing attention to how the technology can save lives by reducing the exposure of medics and comrades to enemy fire.A glimpse into future warfareRobotics has also found symbolic or morale-boosting roles. In 2022, another frontline cat named “Stepan” became a viral figure after soldiers evacuated him from Sievierodonetsk during heavy fighting. Stories like these have underscored the human dimension of a grinding war, where soldiers form bonds with animals in the trenches.Using robots for a humanitarian task, such as rescuing a cat, may appear unconventional, but analysts say it reflects a natural progression of technology in Ukraine’s war effort. The conflict has already been described as the world’s first large-scale drone war, and ground robotics is following the same trajectory.By testing systems in combat and non-combat situations, Ukraine’s military gains practical experience integrating unmanned vehicles into daily operations. Commanders say each mission, whether delivering ammunition or rescuing an animal, contributes to refining tactics for larger-scale use in the future. For the Khartia Brigade, recovering Prapor was more than just a test of technology. It showed their strength, uplifted their spirits, and highlighted the close bonds they built on the front lines.“Prapor was delivered safe and unharmed,” the brigade said. “He served with us at the front and deserves a peaceful life.”
