Two handguns and a loaded high-capacity magazine were found in the unit where the suspect was hiding.
when they spotted the parolee, who was identified as a suspect in an extortion investigation in LAPD’s Hollenbeck division, which includes Lincoln Heights, LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz said in a video released by police. K-9 officers with the LAPD’s elite Metropolitan Division were called in for backup after authorities lost sight of the suspect, identified as Los Angeles resident Jonathan Magana.
Officers then attempted to order Magana, 32, who was inside the unit, to surrender over a loud speaker. He refused, even after police warned him that a K-9 dog would be sent in, Muniz said. Police then shot several bean bag rounds near Magana, and eventually fired a chemical agent in the unit. When police entered the unit, Magana is seen through a hole in the wall pretending to be asleep in another room, according to the police footage.
Two of the injured officers were able to remove themselves from the unit while the third was carried out by fellow police. All three were taken to a hospital. Two handguns — a semi-automatic 9mm Polymer 80 “ghost gun” and a semi-automatic 9mm Glock — and a loaded high-capacity magazine were found inside the unit where Magana was hiding.
