MUST SEE VIDEO: A portion of Interstate 55 is shut down in both directions Monday afternoon after a dust storm caused a 'large crash' in south-central Illinois.
The crashes occurred around 10:55 a.m. and involved 40 to 60 passenger cars and multiple tractor-trailers, two of which caught fire, Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick said. The highway was shut down in both directions in Montgomery County, 75 miles north of St. Louis.
He reported that there were "multiple fatalities" but did not give an exact number, saying that would be released later in the day.A portion of Interstate 55 in downstate Illinois was shut down in both directions after a dust storm caused a major crash involving multiple vehicles Monday afternoon.
