Smelling smoke? 💨 Breezes are pushing smoke from the southeast Valley mulch fire around the metro area this morning. This is a look at one of our Valley cameras showing the haze in the air.
MESA, AZ — A large fire broke out in the Southeast Valley near Loop 202 and Elliot Road Wednesday morning. Crews battling massive mulch fire in Mesa Large plumes of black smoke and flames could be seen from multiple traffic cameras along Loop 202, and it could be seen for miles across the Valley.
The origin of the fire is currently unknown, but Rural Metro fire officials believe it is the result of spontaneous combustion. Video from the scene shows firefighters spraying water on nearby mobile homes in an attempt to keep the fire from spreading. So far no homes appear to have caught fire. No injuries have been reported.Officials say smoke will be present for the next few days, but the Arizona Department of Air Quality will continue to monitor the air quality in the area. ABC15 Meteorologist Iris Hermosillo says you'll likely smell the fire as winds move the smoke into the metro area Thursday morning. If you are very sensitive, it might still be a good idea to limit outdoor activities early Thursday morning, but as we heat up and as winds shift Thursday afternoon, we should see the smoke clear out/improve.
