Video footage shows sheriff's deputy shoot, wound armed man outside a Vista church [Breaking]
Body-worn camera footage released Tuesday shows a sheriff’s deputy shooting a 77-year-old man in one of his legs last week after the man was found with a gun on a Vista church campus.at Iglesia Ni Cristo was the second time Deputy Justin Williams shot an armed man in the line of duty. The patrol deputy has been with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for nearly three years.
“Someone came in and said he was holding a gun in his hand,” the caller tells the dispatcher. She later asks: “Are you guys going to send someone?” In video from Williams’ body-worn camera, he can be heard telling someone in the lot: “He has a gun and we’re here now to make sure that no one else gets hurt or no one gets hurt.”
“I don’t want to have to shoot you,” Williams says, after again commanding the man to put down the gun. A second security video shows deputies backing up and people in the parking lot scattering as the man with the weapon walks forward. A video from a bystander’s cellphone shows the man walking toward the parking lot with the gun in his hand.“My leg is all messed up,” he says. “You got me, all right?”
