Ukraine's Prosecutor General has launched a criminal investigation after a video surfaced online seemingly depicting Russian soldiers killing six unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war. The video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the men being shot in the back. The Ukrainian government has filed a war crimes complaint with the UN and the ICRC.

The Prosecutor General's office of Ukraine has initiated a criminal investigation following the release of a video that appears to depict Russian soldiers executing six unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war. The video, which has gained widespread circulation on social media, shows what seem to be Russian soldiers taking turns shooting six unarmed Ukrainian POWs in their backs.

While CBS News has been unable to independently verify the video, the yellow armbands worn by the men in the clip align with those used by Ukrainian forces operating in the region. The video appears to show the men being shot just outside a dugout, lending credence to the prosecutor general's assertion that they were killed after being captured during an assault. Before the video cuts off, one of the Russian soldiers states, 'One is mine,' and a seventh soldier is shown on the ground, but his condition remains unclear. The Ukrainian government's Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, has filed a war crimes complaint with both the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the incident depicted in the video. 'The Russian army has never been known for its humane treatment of prisoners of war, and this once again demonstrates its weakness and criminality,' Lubinets stated in a press release. 'The lack of accountability has turned crime into a system. We cannot ignore this! Ukraine needs justice and accountability for those who commit crimes and disregard any norms!',This incident occurs amidst the ongoing nearly three-year invasion of Ukraine by President Vladimir Putin's forces, with Russian troops making incremental but consistent territorial gains across the Donbas region in Eastern Ukraine. On Tuesday, Russia's military declared that troops had retaken the village of Dvorichna, situated near the northeastern city of Kharkiv. Russian forces first seized the village shortly after Putin launched the full-scale invasion in February 2022, but it was subsequently recaptured by Ukrainian forces months later during a counter-offensive. The war shows no signs of de-escalation despite President Trump's second term in office, despite his repeated claims of being able to end the war within days. Many Ukrainians, along with their supporters in Europe, have expressed concerns that Mr. Trump might pressure Ukraine, by withholding crucial US military aid, into accepting a negotiated truce with Russia that would allow Putin to retain a substantial portion of the territory his forces have occupied. As CBS News' Holly Williams reported on Tuesday, a recent poll indicates that a slim majority of Ukrainians now support a negotiated ceasefire with Russia — a significant shift from the early days of the war — however, the Ukrainian government and many civilians maintain that any agreement must include guarantees for Ukraine's security, such as the presence of European peacekeepers on the ground or NATO membership
