Premier Jacinta Allan has ruled out introducing a permit system for protests, rejecting the proposal being pushed by Victoria Police.

Premier Jacinta Allan has flatly rejected a Victoria Police push for a NSW-style permit system for protests, declaring officers already have"powers to intervene" when rallies turn violent.

Victoria Police are pushing for permit system to be introduced for protests, after a rally turned violent on Saturday. The Premier added that these powers were backed up by “significant additional resources” that had been invested in Victoria Police over recent years. “What happens in New South Wales is it provides the Chief Commissioner with the authorisation to oppose a gathering going ahead and that opposition can then be challenged through a court process,” Premier Allan said.

“That is why the focus we have is on supporting Victoria Police with the tools and resources they need - significant numbers of extra police, billions of additional dollars invested."
