The Victorian government will abolish laws preventing public drunkenness from Melbourne Cup Day.
Police have warned the move could threaten public safety, given Cup Day is one of the busiest days for officers.
Instead, intoxicated patrons will be sent home or to ‘sobering-up’ centres under new rules set by health professionals.
