Law firm was engaged well before cabinet decision to cancel 2026 event, but Jacinta Allan says it came amid rising cost estimates

Victoria’s premier, Jacinta Allan, has confirmed that the state government hired lawyers weeks before the public was told that it was cancelling the 2026

The then-premier, Daniel Andrews, said a decision had been made by cabinet a day earlier, after cost estimates almost tripled from $2.6bn to $7bn. The questionnaire also revealed the DPC secretary, Jeremi Moule, had travelled to London to inform the CGF of the cancellation on 15 July, three days before the cancellation was announced and two days before cabinet was said to have signed off on the decision.

Barrister Frances Gordon KC was also paid $19,745 for her “legal services regarding withdrawal from hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games”, from 1 August to 17 August.

This week has been pivotal for Ms Allan after she inherited the leadership and state gross debt is projected to surge to $239 billion by 2026. Cost blowouts in projects Premier Allan was responsible for as a minister, such as the Suburban Rail Loop and the cancelled Commonwealth Games, have contributed to the financial woes. “The political radar on which projects and how to frame those decisions … I think that’s going to be a real challenge going into the next election.”
