Several Victorian kindergartens are offering Saturday care as they “play catch up” to demand from the state’s free childcare program.

The Andrews government rolled out free kindergarten in 2023, offering parents up to 15 hours of early education under a $2,500 per child subsidy.

Early Childhood Australia chief executive Sam Page was full of praise for the government initiative, adding the sector was finding ways to expand its capacity to meet the surge in requests for childcare. “The system is still playing catch up, it is fantastic that we have kinder for three and four year old children… but of course buildings haven’t been expanded and staff are still as they were,” she told 3AW on Friday morning.

She clarified the move to open on Saturdays would not force children into kindergartens six days a week, but instead offer an alternative for parents such as shift workers.
