Victoria broke ranks with other basin states by refusing to sign up to the new deal, which extends the deadline for delivering critical water savings infrastructure projects.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has flagged “substantial” sums of money for water buybacks and compensation to achieve environmental targets under an extended Murray Darling Basin Plan unveiled on Tuesday.

“If we don’t act now to preserve it, our basin towns will be unprepared for drought, our native animals will face the threat of extinction, our river ecosystems will risk environmental collapse, and our food and fibre production will be insecure and unsustainable,” she said. When Labor came to office last year, just 2GL of water had been saved towards the target. That now stands at 26GL, leaving a significant 424GL to be found over the next 4½ years.Compounding the issue, an agreement struck in 2018 set strict criteria bout how the 450GL must be recovered to ensure no socioeconomic harm to communities from efficiency projects.

By signing up to the deal, NSW ensured it will continue to receive federal government funding that will reduce the need for water buybacks.
