Victorian students are being warned of the dangers of sharing intimate images online amid a concerning online trend. Explicit photos and videos of underage students, which have been shared with consent at the time, are increasingly later being circulated to others without permission. Police have also reported cases of a young person sharing intimate images taken of another young person for revenge purposes when a relationship ends.

Sharing an explicit image of someone without their consent is against the law and victims have been urged to report the offence to police or an online forum such as ReportCyber and the ESafety Commissioner. “The reality is young people these days are sharing intimate images, and it is their choice whether or not they do so, so we really need to be having positive conversations with the young people in our lives about it,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Colbert said.
