The highest “yes” vote in the country was recorded at Carlton North Primary school. But travel west 476 kilometres to the small town of Underbool and it is a different story.
For Victoria, it was an emphatic No to the Voice – albeit by a significantly smaller margin than the other five states.
Out of 1860 people who voted there, just 129, or 7 per cent, voted No, with the remaining 93 per cent voting in favour of the Indigenous Voice to parliament. In the small town of Underbool, not too far from the South Australian border, just 10 people out of 136 voted Yes, while a remaining 124, or 93 per cent, voted No, the highest negative result in the state.
“Clearly, there’s a stark divide,” Strangio said. “The better off, the more highly educated, the young, predominantly clustered in the inner city, voted Yes, whereas those who feel ... some level of economic and cultural insecurity as you move out to the outer suburbs were more much more likely to vote No.”
RedBridge director Kos Samaras said the Yes campaign was always going to sink or swim in the suburbs, suggesting the Voice failed to capture many middle and outer metropolitan voters. More broadly, less educated Victorian communities were more likely to vote No. For example, in the electorate of Mallee just 11.9 per cent of people hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, the lowest rate in Victoria. The seat also recorded the state’s highest level No vote, at 78 per cent.
