Victor Wembanyama arrived at MSG for the first time Wednesday morning, eager to carve out his own history at the arena beloved and conquered by the megastars before him.
At a legitimate 7-foot-4 with guard skills, the 19-year-old has entered a rarely traveled hype machine and, at least thus far, lived up to excitement. Although it’s years too early for any conclusions about whether he’ll take over James’s throne as the NBA’s face, Wembanyama definitively prefers the nickname “Alien” over “Unicorn.”
“That nickname has been used over and over,” Wembanyama said. “So, I’m not really a big fan of it. Just like LeBron said: ‘Everybody has been a Unicorn.’ But there’s just one Alien.”Wembanyama, who recently hung out with Tom Brady , is anticipating a “tough” and “physical” game against the Knicks, who own one of the NBA’s top defenses.
