Those that gathered at Montgomery’s first-ever Victims of Violent Crime Breakfast decided that the chance to impact someone with their story outweighed the fear of being vulnerable.
One of those courageous speakers was Shanta Penick . She lost both her brother and son to gun violence in June of last year, and wants people to understand violence creates generational trauma.
“I actually bought my granddaughter, who’s 9, a book on grief, because she’s used to my son coming in the room and leaving change or candy on her pillow,” Penick explained. John Riley was another speaker and lost his son in 2016. He now advocates for the conflict resolution skills that could have stopped the violent act he still feels years later.
“It was something that could have been settled through a conversation, you know what I mean? It was reactions and once they committed to those paths, neither one of them could take it back,” he said.Lowndes County sheriff arrested over quarrel at County Commission meetingMontgomery’s Reid Wilson to perform in ‘America’s Got Talent’ Semifinals
