Townsville woman Annmarie Walters has spoken out after her dog bit off her arm on October 11.A North Queensland woman whose dog bit off her forearm says she understands why police had to shoot the animal dead but wishes she had been able to save him.

"Obviously, were brave … he was not a little dog and it took seven or so shots to stop him but it's horrible it even had to happen," she said.Ms Walters said she believed the dog was a mix of Rhodesian ridgeback and Staffordshire terrier, and perhaps a bit of dingo. She urged others to do research into a dog's background.

She said Buddy, which previously attacked a friend of hers, had become traumatised after a recent break-in, bad experiences with other people and moving house.Ms Walters said she had wished she had been able to keep her dog.Ms Walters said she was grateful police had helped to save her life and was adjusting to life without her right arm.

"One of the biggest things is to look for a tense or stiff or even frozen body posture which can mean they're feeling a little bit aroused, perhaps a bit fearful, a bit unsure of the situation," she said.
