On the anniversary of 9/11, veterans gathered to share personal stories and highlight the importance of mental health awareness. Participants brought cherished mementos and emphasized the need for support within the veteran community.

“It’s from our — my wife’s daughter, who passed away years ago, and she carried a kermit with her 22 years of her life,” said Ranger.

As he gathered among other veterans, the anniversary of 9/11 three days ago was still fresh on his mind. “The United States was hit with a disaster,” said Ranger. “It made me want to even more wanting do my job in the military.” Another participant, Jack Powell, a 14-year Air Force veteran, also brought a personal touch to the event. Powell, known for distributing military appreciation coins, uses his jeep as a mobile billboard to raise awareness about veteran issues. The car has stickers about 9/11, the Wounded Warrior Project and the Veterans Crisis Hotline. After listening to the stories of several others at the event, Powell emphasized the importance of mental health awareness.

“If you have any kind of problem — you ever think about suicide or anything like that, and you’re a vet, call the number — get help,” Powell encouraged. “Just talk to a vet. They’ll talk to you...every military person I’ve met will talk to you if you need somebody to talk to. It’s a great thing. There’s no fraternity like a military fraternity.
