Navy commemorates legacy of pivotal WWII engagement aboard USS Midway Museum, named for Pacific battle

Eighty years ago this weekend, in the Pacific Ocean 3,500 miles off San Diego, a military miracle unfolded.

Navy sailors stand in line as Battle of Midway veteran Ervin “Judge” Wendt is taken past them before the start of the commemoration ceremony. Battle of Midway veteran Charles Monroe sits as a video showing images from the Battle of Midway is shown on a screen behind him. According to biographies provided by the Navy, all three Midway veterans saw additional combat at places like Guadalcanal, Tarawa and the Solomon Islands. Holder, 100, also served in the European theater during the war.
