A longtime MLB catcher who has one Gold Glove and one World Series championship was designated for assignment on Wednesday.
The Chicago White Sox are designating veteran catcher Martin Maldonado for assignment, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Maldonado, 37, is in the midst of his worst year as a pro, and will now head to waivers hoping to find a new team in his 14th season in Major League Baseball.More news: MLB Power Rankings: Yankees and Mets Rise, Surprise NL Team Soars Ahead of Second HalfThe White Sox have been MLB's worst team this year, and Maldonado has been the league's worst catcher.
Maldonado won a Gold Glove award with the Angels in 2017 after appearing in 137 games at catcher, finishing 23 Defensive Runs Saved above average. He was also a part of the 2022 Astros team that won the World Series. Maldonado appeared in 113 regular season games with Houston that season and another 11 postseason games.Maldonado is nearing the end of his career, but could get another opportunity with another organization for the remainder of 2024.
